Mikko, The concern should be on physical development. Many kids today are 2 years behind developmentally. They show up in kindergarten lacking fine and gross motor skills. At age 5, they are using a pencil with a fist as a 3 year old would. They are lacking gross motor skills that would allow them to sit up straight in a chair for an extended period of time.
Sure, they are great and fast using a finger on a tablet or cell phone, however long term they need to know how to write. In addition, there are executive function skills that are developed by age 5 within the frontal lobe that cannot be done with technology. Impulse control for example. Many of the leadership and self control skills used later in life are developed at very young ages.
There is also a big issue with blue light and what it does to young retinas, this issue did not exist when you were a kid. Blue light is a recent development with cell phones and tablets. The eye sight damage that will appear in the next 20–30 years will be earth shattering. They know today that blue light kills young retina cells. Every parent should be using a blue light filter on every tablet and cell phone their kids use.
I’m a firm believer in technology, however when it comes to kids, moderation and safe guards are a must.
